For serial comms using a late-model Mac, my experience is that there are two things you should know. Strangely, when I try to connect to the switch via Serial App, I can see the USB serial port and it works perfectly to connect to the switch which means that the USB-to-serial device works fine generally. It converts a USB-C port on your laptop or computer into a RS232 DB9 serial port, giving you a cost-saving way to connect to serial devices such as point-of-sale terminals, serial modems, industrial equipment, and a wide variety of other RS232 peripherals. This USB-C™ to serial adapter lets you connect your USB-C devices to your legacy serial equipment. The symptoms we have observed generally include the spontaneous loss of the USB serial port connection to the board or loss of the port after disconnecting and then reconnecting the board. Since our boards use an FTDI chip for USB-to-serial communication, we have witnessed some of these issues when working with our boards using Mac and macOS. If the devices aren’t working on one or all of the ports it’s more likely to be an issue with your Mac and not the device.

If there is no apparent damage, take two different USB devices and test them against different ports. Inspect the device visually, looking for damage to the connector and any signs of frayed wiring. There’s a chance that it could have failed, particularly so if you’re using a cheaper cable. You’ll be surprised at how many problems a quick restart solves. Before we get into the software fixes, let’s start with the simplest solution of all: restarting your Mac.
